Last night, I watched the CMA Awards. And boy, what a show. It was the 50th CMA Awards so literally everyone in country music was there–except for Shania (where was Shania?!) I made fun of a promo declaring that the first eight minutes would be EPIC because come on promo department. BUT THEY WERE. They opened with a medley of classic country songs with all of the old greats on stage–Charley Pride, Charlie Daniels, Alan Jackson, Clint Black (CLINT BLACK!), Randy Travis, Reba (singing FANCY), Dwight Yoakum, Alabama, and Roy Clark. I mean, it was pretty great–so great, that I called my mother and told her to tune in! And then we live texted the entire broadcast. Brad and Carrie are such delightful hosts. And the rest of the performances were a mix of old and current (my friend Susan texted me ‘Why is Carrie Underwood rap-singing to me?’) and I enjoyed all of them. The Dolly tribute/Lifetime Achievement award should have been much earlier in the show (10p) and they should not have played her off. I don’t care if the show was running 45 minutes over, you don’t play off Dolly Parton. I had to go bed after Dolly, so I missed the end of the show and Taylor Swift but I was so happy that they included her. I could have done without Beyonce (why) and the Dixie Chicks–but I understand the need to play to a demo. Although, with the baseball game on, there was really no need. Anyway, the show brought me great joy and truly made me feel better after a pretty annoying day. I’ve already gone to the gym, showered, blow-dried my hair, and gotten annoyed in a morning meeting and I’m still thinking about how much I enjoyed the CMAs.
